Weather, construction force game changes in Week 1

Expected heavy rain and construction at one local stadium have forced four game changes in the opening week of the prep football season.

Iowa was supposed to take on former district rival Jennings on Friday at Jesse E. Cady Memorial Stadium, but the new lights are not ready yet. The game will be played today at Sam Houston High School at 7 p.m. Head coach Tommy Johns hopes the lights will be ready by Week 4 when they host Wossman High School.

Three games have moved from today (Thursday, Sept. 5) to Saturday, Sept. 7, because of heavy rains expected in the area today from a tropical system just off the coast of Louisiana and Texas. Kinder will play at Welsh on Saturday and Westlake will host Rosepine. Both games will start at 11 a.m. LaGrange will host Peabody at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Besides the Iowa-Jenning game today, East Beauregard will host Grand Lake.

The National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office said Thursday morning that a front combined with moisture coming out of the Gulf of Mexico will cause heavy rain today and Friday. Rain chances for Thursday and Friday are about 90 percent.
