A low-pressure system “meandering” across the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico is now being monitored for the possibility of development into a named tropical system.

Donald Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office, said the disturbance has been given a 20 percent chance of development over the next seven days.

“Regardless of development, the disturbance is expected to continue to produce rain across the region through much of the upcoming week and periods of heavy rainfall will have the potential to produce local areas of flash flooding,” Jones said.

He said additional tropical waves over the central and eastern Atlantic will continue to be monitored for possible tropical development through next week.
