A wet weather pattern is unfolding across the region — just as the high school and college football seasons gets underway this weekend.

National Weather Service Lake Charles Storm Warning Coordinator Doug Cramer said his confidence in widespread rainfall through Labor Day weekend continues to increase.

“As a matter of fact, excessive rainfall may be possible for areas along and south of Interstate 10,” he said.

Chances favor 3-10 inches of rain through Monday.

Rain chances are about 95 percent on Friday; there’s about a 90 percent chance for showers Saturday and Sunday. Winds are expected to by 3-6 mph during the Friday night football games in the area.

Cramer said thunderstorms may impact Friday night games.

“Periods of heavy rainfall will be possible and there’s a 40-60 percent chance of lightning in the area during the game period.”

The heat risk, however, is decreasing as cloud cover and precipitation hovers over the area.

Highs are expected in the mid-80s through Sunday. Evening temperatures are expected in the mid-70s.

Chances also favor a decrease in wildfire behavior as widespread rain occurs, Cramer said.
