LC man gets five-year sentence for failing to register

A Calcasieu Parish man will serve prison time for failing to abide by laws requiring him to register as a sex offender.

Ralph Lamar Spell Jr., 35, of Hayes was sentenced to five years with the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to failure to register as a sex offender in the 31st Judicial District Court on June 27, according to the Jeff Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office. The sentence is to be served without benefit of parole, probation or suspension.

Spell had violated the sex offender registration requirements by failing to register with the state.

Louisiana law requires adults who have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to certain sex offenses to register as sex offender. The requirement for registration lasts for 15-25 years or for a lifetime for violent predators.

The case was investigated by Sarah Fox of the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant District Attorney Torrie Thubodeaux served as prosecutor.
