The Jeff Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office and community partners are teaming up to ensure every student starts the year ready to learn.
The group is holding its second annual Back-To-School Movie Night and School Supply Drive on Friday, July 26, at the multipurpose building at the Jeff Davis Parish fairgrounds, 810 S. Lake Arthur Ave., Jennings.
“It’s just going to be a good event for the community,” District Attorney Lauren Heinen said. “I think parents are ready for their kids to go back to school, so hopefully it gives a little bit of relief and something to do for people.”
School supplies are being collected until noon Friday at the Jeff Davis Parish Courthouse, 300 N. State Street; Jennings City Hall, 154 N. Main Street and Lake Arthur Town Hall, 102 Arthur Avenue. Donations can be placed in the bins in the lobby of each location.
Donations may also be made directly to Amazon. A link is available on the Jefferson Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office Facebook page.
“We want to make sure we get school supplies and backpacks in the hands of the people in the community that need that assistance,” Heinen said.
Distribution of the supplies will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at the fairgrounds. The movie “Migration” will be shown at 6 p.m. Pizza, snacks and drinks will also be available.
“It’s a nice event because the kids have a movie to watch and we have a lot of really fun stuff and some school supplies that we are offering,” Heinen said. “I know some schools have supplies already taken care of at their school, but not everybody has school supplies at home for when they are doing homework.”
Volunteers and sponsors for the event include the Jennings Police Department, the City of Jennings, Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, Boss Moves, Jeff Davis Parish schools, the Family Youth Planning Board, Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office, Town of Lake Arthur, Jeff Davis Parish Prevention Coalition, Chase Bank and others.
