Shaheen wins second Lake Charles City Championship

Hank Shaheen overcame relentless heat and a difficult setup at Mallard Golf Club Sunday to win his second Lake Charles City Championship in three years.

Shaheen finished at even-par 216 to win by three strokes.

“It is awesome. I enjoyed it. I drove it really well today,” Shaheen said. “I never got in trouble off the tee.

“The course played good. Lex (Conner) and them do a great job. It was really tough today, and I think the scores showed it.”

Temperatures sourced into the upper 90s and several days without rain made the course play fast.

“They were tricked out today and the firmness of the greens,” Shaheen said. “They were back to where they were at when they opened.”

In a day that yielded no sub-par rounds, Shaheen produced one of only two even-par rounds. St. Louis Catholic sophomore Kye Hanks had other and finished tied for second with five-time champion Matt Nicholas at 3-over, 219.

He got to two-under for the tournament with an eagle putt from the fringe on the par-5 No. 13 despite a 3-putt on No. 10. That gave him a six-shot lead over Hanks and Nicholas, but he gave back three strokes over the next two holes after a bogey on 14 and a double bogey on the par-3 15 when his tee shot went into the water.

Nicholas was tied with Shaheen at 1-over for the tournament five holes into Sunday’s round, but consecutive bogeys on No. 9, 10 and 11 dropped him five shots behind Shaheen.
