For the second time in four games, the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators won on a walk-off hit Thursday night at Barbe High School to beat the Brazos Valley Bombers 6-5. And once again it was Jake Smith who drove in the winning run.
The Gators scored five runs on four hits and two errors to win for the fourth time in five games. Will Brassil (Colorado Christian University) and Evan Joubert (St. Louis Catholic / LSU Eunice) got things started with back-to-back one-out singles and Dillon Bird walked to load the bases. Aiden Welsh hit a two-RBI and two runs scored on errors before Smith delivered the game-winning hit and his 14th RBI of the season.
Smith also had a game-winning hit on Sunday.
The Gators (10-8) moved within a half-game of the Baton Rouge Rougarou (10-7), the Louisiana division leaders in the Texas Collegiate League.
Before the Gators’ ninth-inning rally, they struggled against the Bombers’ starting pitcher Bryson Walker (University of Houston) who pitched eight innings while allowing one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts and two walks.
Gator starting pitcher Parker Morgan (St. Louis Catholic / McNeese State) pitched four scoreless innings with four strikeouts and a walk to extend his scoreless innings streak to six.
Carter Sutton (Lamar University) earned the win after pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
