The Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators swept a doubleheader from the Baton Rouge Rougarou Saturday at Barbe High School to get back above .500 in the Texas Collegiate League.
Jake Smith (Rosepine HS / Louisiana Tech) had a huge day at the plate, driving in the go-ahead runs in the first game and bringing home the winning run in the second game.
In the first game, the Gator (8-7) trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning and exploded for six runs. Tied 3-3 after Aaron Morgan’s (Colorado Christian) two-RBI single, Smith cranked a 3-run home run out of the park for a 6-3 lead. It was his first home run of the season.
Both teams were limited to seven innings in the doubleheader, but the second game went into extra innings, forcing the teams to use the international tiebreaker where a runner is placed on second base to start each half-inning.
The Rougarou (7-6) scored one in the top of the eighth inning, but the Gators came back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to win the game, including Smith’s walkoff bunt single.
Travis Phelps (Lamar) earned the win in the first game after allowing three earned runs on three hits in three innings after relieving starter Kemonni Pullard. Carson Laws (Texas State) was credited with a save in a scoreless seventh inning where he struck out the side.
In the second game, Hayden Harmon (Louisiana Tech) pitched the eighth inning to get the win, allowing one earned run on no hits with one strikeout.
The Gators and Rougarou will play again today at Golbsy Field in Baton Rouge at 7 p.m.
