Ernest “Blackie” Lopez passed away June 1, 2024, he was a native of Jennings, La. 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings, La. for Ernest “Blackie” Lopez, 81, who passed away peacefully Saturday, June 1, 2024.

The family is requesting visiting hours to be held at Matthews Funeral Home in Jennings, on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.  A Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in Istre Cemetery.

Ernest is survived by his wife of 60 years, Melva Lou Martin Lopez of Jennings, La.; his children, Michael R. Lopez, Rachael Lopez Ourso (Jimmy), Barry J. Lopez (Nola), and Cathy Lopez Pelt; one sister, Betty L. Fontenot, and brother, Harold “Bozo” Lopez. His grandchildren, Ethan Lopez, Eric Lopez, and Linzy Pelt Greenawalt (Zach); step-grandchildren, Rodney W. Flyte, Jesse J. Ourso, Michael P. Ourso, Timmy P. Ourso, Heath D. Pelt; one great-grandchild, his most precious Collins Reese Greenawalt, and one step-great-grandchild, Laney Kate Greenawalt. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Bernice Latiolais Lopez; son, Jason Brent Lopez; siblings, Cora Lopez, Jane Lopez Dartez, Elroy “Pickin” Lopez, and James “Pep” Lopez. 

Serving as pallbearers Mitch White, Codie Steele, Steve Lyon, Mike Monte, Chester Faulk, and Barry Lopez; serving as honorary pallbearers, Michael Lopez, Jimmy Ourso, Ethan Lopez, and Eric Lopez. 

Ernest worked for Angelle’s Concrete for 40 years. His favorite past times were watching old western movies and playing solitaire on the computer. He will be greatly missed.
