Stephen F. Austin is heading back to the Southland Conference.
The American Press has confirmed that a report of the Lumberjacks’ return to the SLC on X (formerly known as Twitter) is accurate.
The report indicated SFA has informed the Western Athletic Conference of its impending move in a letter. Sources confirmed that the school will make the official announcement on Wednesday.
The move will be effective on July 1 as SFA will be one of two schools leaving the WAC for the Southland, joining Texas-Rio Grande Valley. UTRGV announced its move in April but won’t have football until 2025.
SFA will play in the Southland starting this fall, as the league’s football programs have been working of late to figure out the new schedule. Sources have indicated each team will still play seven conference games during the 12-game season, skipping one SLC team club this year.
In basketball, the teams will stay at 20 conference games this season.
SFA was one of five teams that left the Southland Conference in the summer of 2021 with four of them going to the WAC. Since then three of those schools are leaving or have left.
Lamar returned to the Southland after just one season and Sam Houston State moved on to Conference USA after two.
With the two additions this summer, the Southland will have a total of 12 schools with nine playing football this season and 10 the following year,
There are no other expansion plans set for this summer but SLC Commissioner Chris Grant has said he is always looking to strengthen his conference with the “right” additions.
