Gallery by the Lake’s new exhibition “Storytelling” will feature local artist B. Lee “Buddy” White at the Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center.
The exhibit will highlight five acrylic and mixed-media pieces by White. In an artist statement, he said that while he has been “making art” for most of his life, the craft has become more prominent in recent years.
“Now that I am older and free of the normal constraints of making a living and providing for a growing family, I find that art has become my occupation.”
He is mostly inspired by other artists and works of art, he said.
“It may be a single work, a theme or simply an idea that comes to mind from something I see or hear.”
The focus of his art has a wide range and is not limited to one genre. He creates what feels right at the moment, from representational to abstract, two-dimensional to three-dimensional.
“If you’re looking for an artist that uses a certain motif or motifs in their work and offers a variation of those motifs, that’s not me.”
The common thread that unites his recent pieces is the act of storytelling. He said his pieces are a “form of figurative expressionism” with scenes that leave room for interpretation for viewers. The works are often “whimsical and at times more serious in nature as the story tells itself.”
The exhibition will feature pieces from other Gallery by the Lake members.
“Storytelling” will be on exhibition until Saturday, July 20.
The Gallery by the Lake is located on the second floor of Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center, 1001 Ryan St. Admission to the gallery is free. Historic City Hall is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
