It took well into the night Tuesday before the McNeese State offense came up big, but it was enough as the Cowboys topped Louisiana College in Joe Miller Ballpark.
Scoring three times on just one hit in the bottom of the eighth, the Cowboys rallied for a 6-4 victory over their NAIA opponent.
It was the second win over the season for McNeese over the Wildcats, winning in Pineville earlier 6-5 in 10 innings.
“Anytime you don’t have a ton of confidence you are a little more pressing,” said McNeese head coach Justin Hill. “We are going through some of that.”
The midweek win lifted the Cowboys to within a game of the .500 mark at 19-20. Louisiana College fell to 26-16.
“We got some hits when we needed them,” Hill said.
The biggest hit was an RBI single by Braden Duhon that scored Elliott Hebert with the tying run in the eighth. Braley Hollins raced home from third when the throw back to the infield got away with what proved to be the game winner.
McNeese added another run on Peyton LeJuene’s squeeze bunt moments later.
Louisiana College scored two runs in the top of the seventh on Nick Lorio’s single to take a 4-2 lead. Conner Westenburg cut that lead to one with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
The Wildcats scored their first two runs with homers by Burnet Nicholas (2) and Branton Cook (1). McNeese answered with Hebert’s solo homer, his second, and a solo run in the sixth.
JT Moeller (3-4) picked up the win while Colton Williams (0-2) took the loss.
