The last time Barbe Diego Corrales faced District 3-5A rival Sam Houston, things did not go well. But this time the senior southpaw shutout the Broncos as the Bucs won 8-0 on Thursday at home.
On the same field nearly two years ago, the Broncos chased Corrales out of the game in the second inning and won 19-1.
This time, Corrales pitched a complete game shutout.
“He was keeping it (in the zone) — changeup, slider, fastball — and was expanding the zone in and out,” Glenn Cecchini said. “He is really good.
“He can put it where he wants. He is a pitcher. His velocity was a little up. I think he was 83-85, but there weren’t many free passes, and that was the key. Our big thing is attack, attack, attack. Sam Houston is a really good team, and he did a really good job.”
He scattered five hits while striking out five batters and walked two on 96 pitches.
“He was up to 84 (pitches) going into that inning,” Cecchini said. ‘We were going to let him go to 100, and I had a guy warming up in the bullpen, Jelandon Gray, a freshman.
“But he wanted to finish it. A couple of years ago on this field, he didn’t get out of the first inning. He made the statement that it wasn’t going to be like two years ago. That is what he said, and I love that. I want our guys to believe.”
He was still going strong in the seventh inning when he struck out two to start the inning.
Sam Houston (12-2, 4-1) threatened in the top of the second inning with runners on the corners and one out, but the Bucs (15-4, 3-0) turned a 4-3 double play.
Corrales got out of another jam in the fourth inning with back-to-back strikeouts with runners on first and second base.
Barbe scored seven runs or more for the 10th time in 19 games led by leadoff batter Kasen Bellard and two-hole hitter Owen Galt.
Bellard went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. He led off the game with a double and scored on Galt’s single. He drove in two runs on a single to left field with two outs in the second inning.
Sam Houston’s Nik Toups was handed the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in two innings.
Barbe and Sulphur lead the District 3-5A standings at 3-0 and 5-0 respectively. Sulphur (11-5, 5-0) beat Lafayette 2-0 at home Thursday.
