Billy Wayne Knight, 83, of Sulphur, La. passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024. He was born to his late parents, Norman Knight and Dixie Spencer Knight Jordan on April 9, 1940 in Varnado, La. (a small rural community in Washington Parish about one hour north of New Orleans where the majority of his family rest or still reside.) He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, competitive riflery and gunsmithing especially with his good buddies and grandchildren. He was an avid classic muscle car enthusiast and enjoyed rebuilding their engines for fun. At home, he enjoyed fishing for perch and bass in his pond, mowing the yard on top a tall red Mohindra tractor and watching westerns and manly shows involving engines whether in cars, trains, tractors and airplanes while petting his beloved cat. At one time, he also enjoyed spicing up all the meals with Cajun seasonings and making a mean seafood gumbo and potato salad. He often vacationed with his wife and family via road trips to National Parks in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Utah and Tennessee. He also loved visiting Texas during bluebonnet season. Closer to home, he enjoyed camping/fishing on Toledo Bend and was often a “wild squirrel whisperer” getting them to take food right out of his hand.
Bill worked for Citcon from 1977 until 2005 when he retired as a skilled machinist. He was a graduate of Varnado High School and Sullivan Vo-Tech Trade School in Bogalusa, La. He started his career in the box factory of the local papermill now owned by Georgia-Pacific before moving to the Sulphur area in 1977.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Sandra Morris Knight; daughters, Carol Knight of Friendswood, Texas and Cathy Knight Holdsworth (Mark) of Tomball, Texas; along with three grandchildren, Christin Knight, Grant Holdsworth (Megan), and Cameron Holdsworth. He has many nieces and nephews including Kathy Stover (John) of Franklinton, Louisiana who generously helped with family information.
Billy is preceded in death by his parents; stepdad, Luther Jordan, and several Knight half-siblings, Jessie, D.S., Davis, Carlos, Luiza (Thomas), and Fran (Rodgers).
A Celebration of Billy’s life will be held at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 11 a.m., with Pastor Lonnie Gothrup officiating. Visitation will begin on Saturday at the funeral home at 10 a.m. until the time of the service after which refreshments/finger foods will be served at the funeral home.
