Rosepine top seed in D-III, carries 18-game win streak into state playoffs

Rosepine is in the driver’s seat to defend its nonselect Division III state championship.
For a second consecutive season, Rosepine earned the top seed when the Louisiana High School Athletic Association released the girls basketball playoff brackets on Monday.
“It just goes to the hard work that they put in,” Rosepine head coach Charles Kiely said. “It wasn’t a goal, but it was something that we were aiming for,” he said of the No. 1 seed. “It is just bulletin board things. The first step was always a district championship, second the No. 1 seed and now we are on to the third step, trying to repeat.”
Rosepine (27-5) beat Amite 69-61 in the final last year at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. The Warriors are once again the No. 2 seed, leaving open the possibility of a rematch in the title game.
“There are a lot of good teams, especially in the top 10. The Doyles, Amites, the French Settlements and Westlake. It is a very tough top-loaded bracket.”
Rosepine has won 18 consecutive games and is coming off its fourth consecutive district championship with four seniors in the starting lineup in Addison Fruge, Kelly Norris, Kailea Blanenbaker and Nevaeh Rivera.
District 4-2A produced four top-10 seeds along with Oakdale, the defending nonselect Division IV champion, and No. 3 and No. 7 Glenmora in select Division III.
Oakdale (24-7) entered the final week of the regular season as the top seed but their 65-54 loss to the Eagles on Friday dropped them from the top spot and 0.13 points behind No. 1 Arcadia. Oakdale beat Arcadia 47-46 in the semifinals and beat Lakeview 53-48 in the final. As the No. 9 seed last year, Oakdale beat the Nos. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 8 seeds.
The Eagles are one of seven area teams that will have a first-round bye.
“It is great basketball around here,” Kiely said. “I love it. You don’t have to go far to find competition.”
Westlake (22-5) is the No. 4 seed in nonselect Division III and could potentially face the Eagles in the semifinals. With a 13-game win streak, South Beauregard (24-7), the District 3-3A champ, is the No. 2 seed in nonselect Division II after losing in the semifinals at the four-seed last year.
In nonselect Division IV, No. 3 Lake Arthur (25-4) is looking to make its fourth trip to the state tournament in five seasons and has a potential matchup with Oakdale in the semifinals.
As the No. 2 seed in nonselect Division V, Fairview (28-7) looks to add to its state-leading 14 state championships. Fairview has played in the finals four consecutive years, losing to Hathaway 64-54.
After reaching the semifinals for the first time in 2023, Hamilton Christian (22-6) is the third seed in select Division IV.
