South Beauregard used its full-court press and inside game to control the tone of its District 3-3A opener on Friday, beating Lake Charles College Prep 54-10 on the road.

South Beauregard (18-7, 1-0) won its seventh consecutive game.

“I am feeling pretty good,” South Beauregard head coach Susan Johnson said about her team. “They play hard, and they are so coachable.

“That is all we ask for. Our intensity has picked up. We are entering a new season with district, then we will enter another new season in the playoffs and that is just giving them a little bit of momentum.”

The Lady K’s softened up the Trailblazers with its full-court press in the first quarter, forcing four turnovers in the first four minutes to jump out to a 9-0 lead. The Trailblazers, who lost their third consecutive game, turned the ball over 24 times in the first half and hit just 2 of 19 field goals.

“We ran two different full-court presses,” Johnson said. “One was working better than the other.

“It hasn’t been so successful. There has been a kink in it. We can’t figure it out. We are just not as fast as we were last year. It has been successful for some teams.”

LCCP couldn’t stop the Lady K’s inside duo of Kenzie Hudler (14) and Emorie Fontenot (10), who combined for 24 points. Hudler scored 10 of the Lady’s 19 second-quarter points as they went into the break up 35-7.

“Our bigs have been scoring half of our points,” Johnson said. “Our outside game hasn’t been on lately.

“We are so back and forth. Sometimes our shooters are on, and sometimes they are not.”

Reyonna Celestine led LCCP (14-7, 0-1) with three points.
