SULPHUR — Barbe boys and girls basketball teams earned their first wins of the new year Tuesday, sweeping long-time rival Sulphur on the road.

SULPHUR — The Bucs trailed most of the opening quarter before putting together a game-changing run and rolled to a 62-41 win over the Tors Tuesday night.
Duane Deldrage gave the Tors (11-6) a 9-7 lead with 2:12 left in the first quarter, but the Tors wouldn’t score again until 3:28 left in the second quarter.
Barbe (10-6) engineered a 16-0 run to take control of the game. It started with a bucket in the lane by Loic Richard, then Braylon Carter, who scored a game-high 20 points, scored on a fastbreak as the opening quarter ended to put the Bucs up 11-9. Ben Golla hit two of his three 3-pointers in the second quarter to help keep the rally going.
Richard finished with 10 points, and Golla added 12.
Barbe kept up the pace in the third quarter, outscoring the Tors 17-8, to push its lead to 42-23 on a three by Carter.
Barbe held the Tors’ starting five to a combined 15 points, while the bench accounted for 24 points. Deldrage and Kolby Doughterty, who came off the bench, led the Tors with nine point apiece.
It was the Tors’ fourth loss in seven game since they started the season 8-2.

SULPHUR — Barbe came out of the locker room cold but caught fire in the second quarter to beat Sulphur 44-38 Tuesday night.
Barbe (14-6) won their fourth consecutive game over the Tors and has won eight of their last 10 points.
The Bucs were held to two points in the first eight minutes and trailed 5-2 before they scored 20 points in the second quarter.
There were three ties early in the second quarter before Barbe took the lead, 16-15, for good on a pair of free throws by Aniyha Lavan with 2:20 left in the first half.
Lavan and Maleigha James combined for 15 of the Bucs’ 20 second quarter points. Lavan finished with 14 points, and James added 11.
While the Bucs’ offense heated up, their defense cooled off the Tors’ (10-12) top scorer, forward Reese Martin. Despite finishing with a game-high 18 points, Martin was limited to five points in the first half.
Martin got a steal and layup with 4:20 left in the game to drop the Bucs’ lead to 37-33.
