Mr. Carter was born on a farm in Roanoke, La., on Oct. 4, 1922, to Glenn Carter and Bessie Jarnigan Carter. After serving his country in WWII, he finished his degree at SLI (University of Louisiana at Lafayette), married Lydia Erbelding of Johnson Bayou, and moved to Lake Charles. He retired as manager from Thermal Supply of Lake Charles.
Mr. Carter was a member of the “greatest generation” – grew up in the depression, served in WWII in the Army, and honorably raised his family. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Lake Charles. He was a very loving man who never met a stranger. He enjoyed life and cherished his family and grandchildren.
People who knew Mr. Carter appreciated his vivid storytelling, his exceptional memory, and his joyful singing.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Richard (Galina) Carter of Roanoke, Frederick (Patti) Carter of Jennings, Bessie (Tom) Fuller of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Joshua Carter, Joseph (Katie) Carter, Daniel Carter, David (Emily) Carter, Matthew Carter, Camp (Alicia) Fuller, Hope (William) Schmidt, and Laura (Ethan) Benoit; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Lydia; his parents; and a brother, James Carter.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at the SWLA Veteran’s Home, especially Unit 1 for the excellent care and compassion they gave their father.
