McNeese’s Davey earns another honor

The McNeese State sophomore linebacker earned his fifth All-American honor Tuesday following his record-setting season.
Davey was named to the first-team All-American on the FCS level by the American Football Coaches Association.
“Micah is just a great football player,” McNeese head coach Gary Goff said. “He makes tackles all over the field. He had an amazing season for us.”
Davey led the FCS in three different statistical categories – total tackles (153), tackles per game (15.3), and solo tackles per game (8.3). His 15.3 per game average set a new McNeese record while his 153 total stops rank as the sixth-most in school history in a single season.
The Cowboys played just 10 games after their Homecoming contest against Northwestern State was canceled.
“Being nationally recognized is an amazing honor and a blessing but it also puts a chip on my shoulder to go even harder because I know there’s more I can do and there’s players out there competing for the same position,” Davey said.
Davey finished the season on a high note, recording 20 tackles against Houston Christian and 21 at Lamar over the final two weeks. That has him looking forward to next year despite the Cowboys’ 1-10 record.
“I’m extremely excited because this season was far from what anyone predicted it to be,” Davey said. “It showed us all what to change and what to allow and what can’t go on so now we can get the ball going in the right direction from Day 1.”
Davey sounds like a guy coming back to McNeese. That would be great for the Pokes and their fans who feared he might enter the transfer portal.
“I want to see us be able to complete games and finish,” Davey said. “There were too many times where we had a great start to a game and let it slip away.”
McNeese signed 19 new players to the roster Wednesday with the idea of surrounding more talent around Davey according to Goff.
“We have to give him help,” Goff said. “I think we did that today.”
Davey has shown he doesn’t need a lot of help as the rest of college football continues to take notice of his game.
