It has not been the best of starts for the Cowgirls, but after a rough halftime talk, they may have found their game.

Playing their best half of the season, McNeese State’s women’s basketball team rolled to a 107-77 victory over winless North American University Tuesday behind double-digit efforts from Christin Gil and Julia Puente to snap a four-game losing streak.

Gil scored a team-high 23 points to go along with a career-high 13 rebounds. Puente finished with 16 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. It was the first double-double in their careers.

The Cowgirls closed out a six-game homestand 2-4 as they get ready to step up in competition Friday at No. 14 Baylor. They will be looking for their first win against a Division I school after two victories over National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics schools.

“It was a hard talk,” McNeese head coach Lynn Kennedy said of his halftime speech. “Some people got called out and the team got called out. It was good the way we responded.”

The Cowgirls found themselves down 41-40 at the half after the Stallions (0-4) scored the final 12 points of the second quarter. Eight of those points came from guard Elisa Peralta, the last six from the free-throw line.

Peralta ended with a game-high 26 points.

“We got lazy and way too comfortable when we got the lead,” Gil said. “We had to step it up.”

Led by Puente, the Cowgirls did just that, scoring the first six points of the second half. The Stallions made another run, closing it to 52-49 but Gil hit back-to-back runners and Emila Tenbrock followed with a 3-point shot and the route was on.

Tenbrock added 20 points as five Cowgirls scored in double figures. Ana Cabañas (14),and Helena Galunic (12) also scored.

McNeese outscored NAU 38-18 in the third and 67-36 in the second half.

“That was our best quarter of the season,” Kennedy said. “That is who we are when we play well.”

McNeese finished with 22 assists on 36 made field goals and hit 11 of 27 from behind the 3-point line.
