Herbert was born on Jan. 26, 1942 in Port Arthur, Texas to the late Sidney and Hilda Chavis Johnson. Herbert was a 1961 graduate of W.O.  Boston High School in Lake Charles, La.  Then, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from September 1964 through January 1967 during the Vietnam War.  Herbert was hired by Cities Service Oil Company, now Citgo Petroleum, as a refinery operator. Herbert was formally united in marriage to Gloria LeCompte for 38 years and they welcomed one daughter, Claudia LeCompte-Johnson. 

 Herbert leaves to mourn his passing, yet cherishing precious memories his daughter, Claudia LeCompte-Johnson of New Orleans, La., and one granddaughter, Cassandra LeCompte-Johnson of New Orleans, La. Herbert was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Gloria LeCompte-Johnson; his parents, Sidney and Hilda Chavis Johnson, and three sisters, Shirley Johnson Swaggard, Glenda Johnson Cooper, and Beverly Johnson Lazare.

Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023 from 12 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. in Combre Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will be Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023 at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Combre Funeral Home.
