Sixkiller: Cowboys hope they found their gunslinger

With a name straight out of central casting, the newest quarterback is set to take center stage at Cowboy Stadium.
True freshman Kamden Sixkiller will get his first career start Saturday night when McNeese State closes out the home portion of its season.
On Senior Night, all eyes will be on the freshman who got his opening taste of college football last weekend.
“I’m just excited to get this chance,” said Sixkiller. “I want to go out there and help the team and do what I can to get us a win.”
Last week, in a 38-24 loss at Southeastern Louisiana, Sixkiller played just over a half, leading McNeese (1-8, 1-4 Southland Conference) to 17 points. His first throw of the second half was a 77-yard touchdown pass to Jihad Marks, making him the first true freshman to throw for a score in his McNeese debut since 2010.
“I was so excited, I just jumped up and down all the way to the sideline,” Sixkiller said. “That is what you dream of, throwing for a touchdown in college. It felt great.”
He had his ups and downs against the Lions as the Cowboys’ season of struggles continued with their eighth consecutive on-field loss. Their lone victory was by forfeit.
Sixkiller is the latest in a line of quarterback in second-year head coach Gary Goff’s Air Raid offense. Goff said he wants to see what the 6-foot-4, 187-pound gunslinger out of Norman, Oklahoma, can bring to the program.
“We will put him back there and let him rip,” Goff said. “We want to see what he can do moving forward.”
Sixkiller is the third starting quarterback, and fourth overall, this year. He is also the seventh to do so since Goff took over the program last season. Four of those players are no longer in the program.
“I thought he was really composed for it being his first time playing college football,” Goff said of Sixkiller. “He was poised in the pocket and in the huddle.
“Sixkiller showed some flashes of being the quarterback of the future, but it is just one game. There are still two more games he will get to play in so we will see how he handles the pressure.”
Goff said the other players were excited to see him get a chance after showing his skills at practice. But first they had to find out who he was.
Sixkiller started the year fifth on the depth chart and didn’t make the traveling squad. He was nursing an injured shoulder he got while working out in the summer and could hardly throw the ball 5 yards.
And his teammates, some weren’t sure what his name really was.
“Some of them came up and told me they thought Sixkiller was my nickname at first,” the young quarterback said. “They were surprised it was my real last name.
“I just want to show what I can do and give us some hope to win. I hope I can do what I expect I can do. Getting to start is an amazing opportunity that I didn’t see coming five or six weeks ago.”
Against the Lions, Sixkiller finished 9 of 19 for 130 yards with both a touchdown and interception. While there was both good and bad in a season that has been void of victories, his play offers promise that he can become a program changer.
The quarterback said he isn’t worried about any of that.
“You try to ignore all the talk,” Sixkiller said. “I want to take it with a grain of salt and try not to get too wrapped up in all of it. I want to learn from this experience. I want to have a good performance, play the way I know how to, and get us a victory. That’s what matters most, and we need one.”
And the coaching staff, they say they want to keep it simple for their new starter.
“We want him to go in there and do what he knows how to do and have fun and throw the ball around,” Goff said. “There is no pressure on him now. We want him to execute and have fun.”
