FOOTBALL BRACKETS: The football playoffs will begin Thursday.
The LHSAA released the playoff brackets on Sunday, and seven Southwest Louisiana teams earned top-10 seeds.
The highest seed was St. Louis Catholic (8-2). The Saints are the No. 6 seed in select Division II and received a first-round bye. The Saints will host the No. 11 McDonogh #35 and No. 22 Lord Beaconfield Landry winner in the regional round.
Area top-10 seeds on the nonselect side include No. 8 Iowa (8-2), No. 7 Leesville (7-3) and No. 10 Jennings (7-3) in Division II, Division III No. 10 Kinder (5-4) and Division IV No. 8 Welsh (7-3) and No. 10 Oakdale (7-3).
There will be two all-Southwest Louisiana matchups in nonselect Division IV. Welsh will host No. 25 Basile (5-5) at 7 p.m. Friday, while Oakdale host No. 23 East Beauregard (6-4) at 7 p.m. Friday.
On Friday, Kinder faces No. 23 Avoyelles (3-7), Iowa will take on No. 25 Grant (3-7), Leesville will host No. 26 St. Martinville (3-7) and No. 23 Kaplan (7-3) travels to Jerry Simmons Stadium to take on Jennings. Jennings and Leesville could meet in the regional round for a second consecutive season. Leesville won last year’s game 21-7 in Jennings, while this year’s would be in Leesville.
DISTRICT CHAMPS: The Barbe upped its streak of consecutive combined district swimming championships to 13 after dominating the District 3-5A meet on Thursday in Lafayette.
The girls have won at least six consecutive district titles, while the boys won all but one in that same time span, finishing runner-up last season.
Barbe’s Louisa Rossowski won the 200-yard individual medley (2:33.72) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:45.65).
The LHSAA state swim meet is Nov. 15-18 at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center.
NATIONAL SIGNING DAY: Many Southwest Louisiana Athletes are set to ink their National Letter of Intent this week.
Wednesday marks the start of the early signing period for NCAA Division I basketball and the regular signing period for all other non-football Division I and Division II sports.
The early signing period for basketball ends on Nov. 15, and the regular period starts April 17.
