Week 9 prep football rewind: Gators pick up first win

Behind a record-setting performance from running back Keshaun Doucet, LaGrange won its first game in a year on Friday.

The Gators beat District 3-4A rival Washington-Marion 30-28 on Friday. Their last win was against the Charging Indians on Oct. 27, 2022.

Doucet set a school single-game rushing record with 340 yards on 41 carries with four touchdowns.

In the fourth quarter, Doucet rumbled 40 yards to tie the score at 28-28 with 6 minutes left and scored the go-ahead 2-point conversion.

Washington-Marion (1-8, 0-4) got to the Gators’ 1-yard line with 1:20 left, but LaGrange’s Isiah Lewis recovered a fumble to seal the win for the Gators (1-8, 1-3).

District 3-5A

Sulphur (3-6, 2-5), led by senior quarterback Addison Constance, ended a five-game losing streak with a 45-34 win at New Iberia (1-8, 1-6).

He threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns and added a pair of long rushing scores as the Tors racked up 524 yards of total offense.

In Lafayette, Barbe (6-3, 4-3) extended its win streak to four games and kept its playoff hopes alive with a 24-7 win over Comeaux (0-9, 0-7).

Freshman quarterback Jelandon Gray passed and rushed for a touchdown, and junior running back Eric Jones ran for 117 yards and a touchdown.

District 3-4A

Leesville (6-3, 4-0) and DeRidder (5-4, 2-2) each picked up wins behind huge rushing performances.

Leesville’s Xavier Ford ran for a season-high 309 yards and six touchdowns on 39 carries in a 48-24 win over Eunice (6-3, 3-1) to move the Wampus Cats within a game of claiming the district title outright. Ford, with 1,819 rushing yards, is approaching 2,000 yards for a second consecutive season.

Reed Williams scored a season-high five touchdowns while picking up 172 yards on 18 carries to lead the Dragons to a 49-20 win over Rayne (6-3, 2-2). Williams has scored 13 touchdowns in his last five games.

District 3-3A

Iowa (7-2, 6-0) shut out St. Louis Catholic (7-2, 4-1) in the second half to win its second consecutive district championship in a close one, 26-21.

Quarterback Josiah Bushnell topped 100 rushing yards (20-120, 2 TDs) for a second consecutive week and completed 14 of 20 passes for 182 yards and a score.

Jennings (7-2, 4-1) earned a narrow 30-28 win over Lake Charles College Prep (3-6, 2-3) to extend its win streak to five games.

ReJohn Zeno led the ground assault with 214 yards and a touchdown, while Humphrey Ned scored twice, on a 29-yard pass and a 21-yard run.

Kinder (5-4, 2-3) used its ground game to beat Westlake (3-6, 0-5) 32-21.

The Yellow Jackets topped 400 rushing yards (415) for the third time. Noah Romero and Donte Botley combined for four touchdowns and 165 yards on 12 carries.

South Beauregard (3-6) shut out Pickering 49-0 (0-9) in a nondistrict game to end a five-game losing streak. Mason Richard scored on runs of 37 and 8 yards, and Luke Gisclair was 7-for-7 on point after kicks.

Class 2A

Lake Arthur (5-4, 1-3) escaped with a 36-35 win at DeQuincy (2-7, 1-3) when quarterback Ray Levi scored the go-ahead 2-point conversion after his 26-yard touchdown run. He had two rushing touchdowns and one passing.

Welsh (7-2, 4-0) blistered Vinton (1-8, 0-4) 47-6 to set up a Thursday night showdown with Notre Dame (6-3, 4-0) for the District 5-2A championship.

In his first start under center this season, Dane Iguess completed 7 of 10 passes for 159 yards and four touchdowns, and Hayden VanNess ran for 106 yards and two scores on 14 touches.

District 5-1A

At Merryville High School, Basile (5-4, 4-1) running back Tucker Leblanc ran for a season-high 175 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bearcats to a 36-14 win over the Panthers (2-7, 0-5).

Hamilton Christian (4-5, 3-2) continued its late-season surge with its third consecutive win, beating East Beauregard (5-4, 3-2) 54-44.

After missing three games to an injury, Javon Vital scored on a 45-yard run and caught six passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns, while Sammy Knight completed 8 of 12 passes for 194 yards in his fourth start at quarterback.
