WESTLAKE — Jennings showed its big play ability on offense Thursday night to beat Westlake 49-8.
The Bulldogs totaled a season-high 403 yards of total offense with five plays over 20 yards and four scoring plays over 25 yards.
“Our defense has been pretty consistent the last couple of weeks, but tonight our offense (was),” Jennings head coach Bret Fuselier said. “We have kind of been trying to find our way around on offense.
“I thought we had a good night tonight executing. We had some big runs. ReJohn had some big runs, but the guys around him had some big runs also. J.J. (Benoit) had a good night through the air, so I am proud of all of our guys.”
Junior running back ReJohn Zeno ran for 192 yards, averaging 16 yards a carry and scoring three times on runs of 67, 4 and 51 yards.
Sophomore quarterback J.J. Benoit was a perfect 3 for 3 for 70 yards and a pair of touchdown passes, and freshman Chris Ned threw a 25-yard scoring strike to Travon Gallow in the third quarter.
“He (Ned) is just a freshman, but he is learning his way too. He is a talented kid, and he is a good quarterback, so it was good to see the future right there.”
Jennings (6-2, 3-1) pushed its season-best win streak to four games and stayed within a game of St. Louis Catholic (6-1, 4-0) and Iowa (5-2, 4-0) in the District 3-3A title race.
“It is good. We are learning a little bit every week,” Fuselier said. “Right now, we are learning how to be consistent as a group, you know as a team.
“That was my big thing this week. We have to be consistent about this. We have won four in a row. Let’s string some together. It is all about staying focused on one game at a time to get that consistency. I was proud of my guys for doing that. Early in the season, we couldn’t have done that, but our guys are growing up now.”
Jennings scored on all five of its first-half possessions, starting with a 44-yard pass from Benoit to Carson Barr with 4:25 left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs held Westlake to 150 yards of total offense and eight first downs.
“Our defense has been solid,” Fuselier said. “It is them getting comfortable with their positions.
“We are really playing fast on defense. Even though there were no turnovers, it doesn’t matter. We get the win. We just want to win by one or more every week.”
Westlake avoided its fourth shutout of the season when Brody Anderson connected with Mike Mitchell for a 47-yard score with 15 seconds left in the game.
Anderson completed 10 of 15 passes for 108 yards, and Mitchell had two catches for 55 yards. Braylon Garrick ran for 42 yards on 15 carries.
