While it has not been a good season for McNeese State, one Cowboy has been a real standout.

Micah Davey, a redshirt sophomore linebacker, is having a big season.

Thursday Davey was rewarded for his good start by being named to Phil Steele’s midseason FCS All-American Team. Davey was named to the fourth team on Steele’s list.

“He is having a great year,” McNeese head coach Gary Goff said. “I think he even has more in him. I don’t think he has reached his peak. He is still playing at a high level. ”

Davey, who started the final game last year because of injury and had 18 tackles in a win over Lamar, has been just as productive this season despite the Cowboys’ woes. He has recorded 10 or more tackles in all six games this season and tied his career-high of 18 in Week 3 at Alcorn State.

Davey leads the Southland Conference in tackles this season at 13.7 a game, which is good for second in the nation on the Football Championship Subdivision level. In nine of his 17 career games, he has recorded 10 or more tackles, posting 150 total.

“I just try to go out there and make the tackles,” Davey said earlier in the season. “I go out there and look to make the plays.”

McNeese’s opponent Saturday, Incarnate Word, has a pair of players named to the first team. Senior defensive lineman Stephen Parker leads the FCS in tackles for loss this season with 14, 6.5 of those coming from sacks.

Parker is joined by fellow senior Brandon Porter, a wide receiver. Porter is third in the country in receiving yards per game at 106.5. Two other SLC players, Southeastern tight end Bauer Sharp (second team) and Houston Christian linebacker) Jalyx Hunt (third team) was also named to the squad.

Goff said his team has had a good two weeks of practice heading into the game against the fifth-ranked Cardinals, who last year made it to the FBC semifinals.

“They are a very good team,” said Goff. “We have to play our game and not turn the ball over. If you do, they can embarrass you.”

Injured starting running back D’Angelo Durham remains a game-time decision for the Cowboys. He missed the last game against Texas A&M-Commerce with a shoulder issue. Coleby Hamm, who was also out against the Lions, will be healthy according to Goff.

In other McNeese sports news, the Cowboy baseball team announced its fall scrimmage against national champion LSU set for Nov. 5 is a sellout. The event, set for 16 innings or so, is the first fall sellout in McNeese baseball history.

“It’s not just a fall game,” said McNeese baseball coach Justin Hill. “It’s a fall game at home against the defending national champions and one of the most storied college baseball programs in history.

“LSU has only been to Lake Charles one time since I have been here and twice since 2012. This might never happen again here, so I appreciate coach (Jay) Johnson bringing his club here to play.”
