The high school volleyball regular season is down to its final two weeks, and several area schools are trying to make a push to make the postseason or secure a home playoff match.
LaGrange in Division II, and Westlake in Division III, have an opportunity to claim a first-round home match with a strong finish.
LaGrange (15-6) is reveling in its best season in more than a decade.
The Gators are riding a four-match win streak with six matches remaining. They are ranked No. 18 in Division II and would need to leapfrog two teams to earn their first home playoff match in more than two decades.
The play of veteran setter Katelynn Wilson has boosted the Gators.
“I think this year we just have a seasoned setter,” LaGrange head coach Kaleisha Roberts said. “She is my only returning starter. She makes a big difference. She is so smart and knows how to read everything.”
Wilson and outside hitter Cierra Amos are the only seniors in the starting lineup. Juniors Dakhia Alfred and Jahmaria Griffin provide a solid presence at the net, while sophomore libero Marleigh Alexis’ return from injury helped improve the Gators’ defensive play.
“We are a better passing team this year,” Roberts said. “We are super young but we are more consistent.
“We changed a few things on defense and changed the lineup a little bit and it has just been working. The more we play the better we get. We just have to continue to be consistent and keep our energy up. My girls are scrappy, and they always find a way to get it done.”
Roberts is in her fourth year as head coach and is a LaGrange alum. She was a member of the Gators’ last state tournament team in 2003 when LaGrange upset Dutchtown on the road to advance to the quarterfinals. The Gators have put together three consecutive winning regular seasons under Roberts.
“It is getting the girls to buy in and understand what volleyball is,” Roberts said. “This is my first year with a group that I have had from freshman all the way to their senior year.
“The change is to actually get them to be volleyball players. We have always been athletic and scrappy.”
Westlake (13-8) has won eight of its last 10 games and trails No. 16 West Feliciana by .22 points in the Division III power ratings. The Rams trail St. Louis Catholic (8-12) by a game in the Division III, District 1 race after a five-set loss to the Saints on Tuesday.
Sam Houston owns the Lake Area’s highest ranking at No. 3 in Division I. All five of their losses were to top-five teams — Division II No. 1 St. Thomas More, Division III No. 2 Parkview Baptist and Division V No. 1 Metairie Park Country Day.
The Broncos need one more district win to secure at least a share of their fourth consecutive Division I, District III championship.
The final games of the regular season could make or break four area teams’ — Sulphur, Lake Charles College Prep, Iowa and Hamilton Christian — postseason hopes. All four are hovering around the 32-team cutoff in their respective brackets.
LCCP (13-8) is enjoying its best season in the program’s brief four-year history and has won more games (13) than its first three seasons (2019, ’21, ’22) combined when the Trailblazers won 12.
The Trailblazers are rated 35th in Division III and need to jump three spots over the final four games to make their first postseason appearance.
Iowa (11-19) is the last team in Division III slotted at No. 32 while Sulphur (10-13) is No. 34 in Division I and Hamilton Christian (8-10) is holding on to the 31 spot in Division V.
