Now that Welsh has all its pieces back in place, things are starting to come together for the Greyhounds.

Injuries hampered the Greyhounds early, resulting in an 0-2 start and allowing 101 points. Since a 50-6 win over Hamilton Christian in Week 3, they are 3-0.

“We have got a lot of those guys back,” Welsh head coach Ronnie Courville said. “Two of those guys that went down, we did lose for the season.

“It has been good to have some consistency and get things rolling.”

Running back Hayden Van Ness, offensive guard Luke Luntsford, defensive lineman/tight end LaTroy Pattum, cornerback Kendal Touchet, weak safety Ethan Beard and free safety Darien Pugh have returned to the lineup in recent weeks.

Van Ness ran for a season-high 171 yards and a touchdown in a 26-21 win over Loreauville after missing two games with an injury.

“He ran better as the game went on,” Courville said of Van Ness. “He didn’t get any carries last year. He is still learning.”

Welsh has seen improvements on both sides of the ball during the streak, Courville said. The offense is averaging 47.3 points a game, while the defense is allowing nine points a game.

“The kids are getting better every week,” Courville said. “It is really just having the same kids in the same spot for three weeks in a row.

‘Early in the year, we had kids in different spots every week. We have had consistency and it has helped the kids progress. I feel good. The kids are motivated coming off a three-game win streak. They are excited and we just have to keep getting better.”

Welsh (3-2) will test its win streak against Grand Lake (3-2) tonight to open play in District 5-2A.

“They are going to be a real tough team, just like last year,” Courville said. “They are going to be well coached and physical.

“The key is upfront on the O-line and D-line. Their O-line does a real good job coming off the ball, so it will be a physical game.”

Grand Lake averages 277.4 rushing yards per game, led by Ian Vigo (83 carries, 726 yards, 6 TDs).
