St. Louis Catholic rallied late in the first set and turned it into a sweep of Vinton on Tuesday at home to open play in Division III, District I.

St. Louis (6-12, 1-0) won 25-19, 25-10, 25-16.

“Our skill is there for the most part, but we have been working a lot on our mental toughness and our ability to bounce back quicker from mistakes,” St. Louis Catholic head coach Elizabeth Thompson said. “I think in the first set, myself included, we were all getting a little too tense and a little too worked up over the small things.

“We tried to refocus, have a little more fun and loosen up a little bit. I think that worked for us in the second and third sets.”

Tied 17-17 in the first set, St. Louis closed with an 8-2 run led by four kills by Emma Broussard, who finished with a match-high 11 kills plus eight digs and four aces. Katie Billeadeau added eight kills, 15 digs and four aces, and Grace Adams made 13 assists and six digs.

St. Louis won for only the second time in 10 matches, but Thompson is seeing improvement.

“We have struggled when it comes to the win and loss record, but we have been playing some really good volleyball. We are really young, so we are still making some mistakes that show our age and youth. But I think that we are learning from them, so, hopefully, as we come into district we will start to see some benefit from those lessons we have learned along the way.”

Vinton’s (9-9, 0-1) Jolie Gray (5) and Dru Coleman (4) combined for nine kills, Lauren Heinen made 10 assists and Beonca Harvey had eight digs.
