Skate-Tember is bringing back the ’90s

Grab your bucket hats, plaid flannel shirts, slip dresses and skates: Skate-Tember 90’s night is happening from 6 to 8 p.m. this Friday, September 29 at the Lake Charles Civic Center Coliseum.

This is the final installment of the Skate-tember trilogy, a recreational event hosted by the City of Lake Charles Recreation and Parks Department. Michael Castille, City of Lake Charles director of community services, said that participants can expect a “fun environment paired with great 90s tunes.”

The first two Skate-Tember events, which were 70s and 80s themed, were successful. He said that they had over 300 attendees.

Skate-Tember is part of the City’s Recreation and Parks programming, which aims to expand access to unique experiences to all communities in the area.

“We hear the calls for an indoor skating rink regularly, and while this is typically a private sector venture, we have been able to utilize our facility to temporarily fill a gap and offer a fun and unique experience.”

This is a new event that was inspired by the uptick in interest towards roller skating as a leisure activity.

“Like most things, leisure activities tend to be cyclical in nature. The popularity of a particular activity may drop off for some time, but we often see the pendulum swing back in the other direction. In recent years, skating has grown popular as a healthy outdoor activity and as we continue to develop plans to enhance our lakefront, bringing skating into the Civic Center Coliseum was a no-brainer.”

Skate-Tember is a time machine for older locals and a new experience for younger ones.

“For several generations in our community, hanging out at the skating rink is a fond memory. At the same time, there is a younger generation that has not had the opportunity to experience indoor roller-skating. Skate-Tember appeals to every generation, allowing those who grew up roller-skating to reflect on days gone by, reliving that experience, and those who have not had that opportunity to experience the pure joy of whipping around the skating rink, wind blowing through their hair, while they listen to fun, upbeat music, to do so.”

The music will be provided by the event’s partner KBYS 88.3 FM. Good music is a “powerful connector to memory” and is vital for the Skate-Tember experience.

“Their DJs have had a blast keeping our skaters rolling to the best tunes of each decade.”

A limbo and best-dressed competition will take place. Winners will receive “cool KBYS swag.”

Guests are encouraged to don outfits and costumes emulating the 1990s.

Admission to skate is $5. Participants under the age of 16 are required to have an adult accompanying them.

Concessions will be available for purchase.

Skates will not be provided. Only non-motorized roller and inline skates will be permitted on the floor.

Due to the overwhelming support that Skate-Tember received, Castille is confident that the department will work to make it an annual event.
