Week 3 rewind: W-M ends 12-game losing streak

The third week of the high school football season saw the number of undefeated teams drop to four, but two teams earned their first wins of the season.

Washington-Marion ended a 12-game losing streak with a 28-0 road win over West St. Mary as running back Ashlone Thomas topped the century mark for the second consecutive game. He ran for a season-high 205 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 30 carries.

The Charging Indians won for the first time since beating LaGrange 34-6 on Oct. 29, 2021. It was the their first shutout since a 54-0 win over Beau Chene on Sept. 21, 2018.

W-M will play its fourth consecutive road game, at Lakeshore, this week before hosting Peabody next week in its home opener.

Ronnie Courville picked up his first win as a head coach, and Welsh beat Hamilton Christian 50-6.

Junior quarterback Jonavon Begnaud expertly guided the Greyhounds offense, throwing a trio of touchdown passes, plus a pair on the ground. He ran for 59 yards and passed for 130.

Freshman Azarius Bennett ran for 113 yards and a score in his first start, and tight end/defensive lineman Latroy Pattum caught a 34-yard touchdown pass and had two sacks on defense.

Two teams were knocked from the unbeaten ranks — St. Louis Catholic, which lost a defensive battle to Vidor, Texas, 21-17, and Lake Arthur, which was shut out by unbeaten Jeanerette 32-0.

Class 5A

Sam Houston scored three times in the final 10 minutes to pull away for a 36-22 win over District 3-5A rival Barbe to stay undefeated.

The Broncos used their ground game (309 yards) to grind down the Bucs. Drew Bailey and Everett Pertle combined for 222 yards and three touchdowns.

Sam Houston recorded three interceptions to bring their season total to nine in three games.

At Sulphur, the Tors picked up their first District 3-5A win, beating Lafayette 42-33 in an aerial shootout.

Senior quarterback Addison Constance hit on 80 percent of his passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end J.D. Lafleur, an LSU commitment, caught 10 passes for 153 yards and a score, a 67-yarder in the fourth quarter that put the Tors up 28-27 after they went down 27-15 in the third.

Lafayette quarterback Kevonte Landry completed 10 of 23 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns.

Class 4A

Leesville junior running back Xavier Ford had another monster game with 264 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-13 win over Iowa in a rematch of last year’s nonselect Division II quarterfinals.

It was his seventh 200-yard-plus game of his career. After running for more than 2,500 last season, Ford is on pace to top that with 748 yards and eight touchdowns through three games.

Class 3A

With District 3-3A action starting next week, Kinder and Westlake are undefeated.

Westlake took out Vinton 40-6 as quarterback Brody Anderson (33-53-0, 732 yards, 10 TDs) and wide receiver Kevin Rideau (18 rec., 374 yds., 7 TDs) hooked up for their sixth and seventh touchdowns.

Josh Parr (7 tackles, 3 tackles for loss) and Taylan Ruben (5 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 QB hurries) led the Rams’ defense that has allowed 13.3 points a game.

Kinder continues to excel in its second season in Class 3A after a 34-0 shutout win over Rosepine for its best start since 2014.

Junior running back Logan Leboeuf continued as the Yellow Jackets’ workhorse in the backfield with his third consecutive 100-yard game.

South Beauregard has its first win streak (2) after beating rival DeQuincy 27-6. Clayton Folk ran for 107 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Walker Langton threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Zae Douglas scored on a 25-yard fumble return in Jennings’ 17-3 win over DeRidder.

Class 2A

Oakdale is 3-0 for the first time since 2007 after a 35-20 win over Ville Platte.

Elijah Anderson had a rushing and receiving touchdown, and Deekota Johnson threw a pair of touchdown passes of 47 and 32 yards to Tim Horne and Anderson, respectively.

Class 1A

East Beauregard ran up 364 rushing yards last week to beat Mamou 40-12.

Caleb Johnson (188 yds., TD) and Zane Hildreth (113 yds., 3 TDs) topped 100 yards.

The Trojans average 280.3 rushing yards per game and have attempted four passes in three games.

First win: Washington-Marion, Welsh.

Undefeated: Sam Houston, Kinder, Westlake, Oakdale.

Winless: LaGrange, Pickering, DeQuincy.
