Sulphur Parks and Recreation (SPAR) is going big for its 75th Anniversary celebration, today, Sept. 16, at Frash Park. Festivities are open to the public, not just SPAR district members.
Beginning at 8 a.m., browse more than 70 vendors showcasing produce, homemade goods, crafts and more.
Thanks to the Calcasieu Parish Office of Human Services support, residents will be able to shop at the Second Harvest Food Bank. The truck arrives at 10 a.m. Gumbo Extravaganza On Da Geaux and Cowboy Cones Sno Cones will be there.
Recreation will abound. SPAR instructors will hold free fitness classes. The city of Sulphur Fire and Police Departments will supply free information about fire prevention and job opportunities.
Throughout the park, stations will be set up with plenty of sporting action, football, speed throws, tennis, basketball under the pavilion, sand court volleyball and sign up stations for parents who want to keep their kids active in SPAR year round.
Under the shady oaks, the Calcasieu Parish Library will supply books, games and more, and at Henning Cultural Center, children ages 5-12 can paint a wooden cutout of Herman the Squirrel (named for Herman Frasch), beginning at 9 a.m. Adults can see photos and memorabilia of Sulphur Parks and Recreation events through the past 75 years.
At the end of the Day, after the Market Shopping, the exercise classes, the sports station and the books, there will be cake and plenty of it, according to Lori Koezler, SPAR executive director.
