ATV driver succumbs to injuries sustained in crash

An 84-year-old Welsh man has died from injuries he sustained in a Sept. 8 in a two-vehicle crash involving an ATV near the intersection of La. 1126 and Nelson Road in Jefferson Davis Parish.

The crash claimed the life of Robert R. Montie.

Louisiana State Police Sgt. Derek Senegal said a 2011 Honda Rancher ATV driven by Montie, was traveling east on La. 1126. At the same time, the driver of a 2020 Nissan Altima was traveling east behind the ATV at a faster speed and struck the rear of it. The impact caused Montie to be ejected from the ATV.

Montie sustained serious injuries and was transported to a Lafayette area hospital by air ambulance for treatment. The driver and the front seat passenger of the Nissan were both properly restrained and not injured.

Impairment on the part of the driver of the Nissan is not suspected. This crash remains under investigation. 

On Sept. 9  Troop D was notified that Montie had succumbed to his injuries. 

Troop D has investigated 23 fatal crashes resulting in 26 deaths in 2023.
