A nightmare first quarter at Cougar Stadium on Friday turned into Lake Charles College Prep’s first loss, 43-7, to Class 4A No. 4 Westgate.
“It was just the early first half; they started off fast and we started off slow,” LCCP head coach Erick Franklin said. “It was very simple. That is a very good team.”
A week ago the Trailblazers (1-1) were humming on offense and defense after beating Magnolia School of Excellence 73-0, but Westgate (2-0) jumped out to a 22-0 first-quarter lead, stunning the Class 3A No. 7 Trailblazers.
Led by four-star quarterback/cornerback Jaboree Antoine, who, according to reports, is expected to make an official visit to LSU today, the Tigers went 64 yards on the game’s opening drive. Antoine had a 12-yard carry on third-and-7 and later hit Davian Jackson for a 40-yard score with 9:33 left in the first quarter.
Antoine picked up 33 yards on four carries on the next drive before handing off to running back Tavias Gordon, who pushed the lead to 15-0 with a 12-yard score.
Bryce Richard sacked Antoine to start the Tigers’ third drive, but a huge 41-yard run by Davian Jackson negated that, and Gordon capped the drive with his second score with 4 seconds left in the opening quarter.
The Trailblazers, who were looking for their first win in three tries against Westgate, seemed to pick up momentum after Elijah Garrick turned a pass from Matthew Higginbotham into a 58-yard score on the first play of the second quarter. But another long drive (75 yards) by the Tigers cemented their lead on a 45-yard touchdown rumble by Gordon. Amari Simon added a 7-yard run with 2:47 left in the second quarter, and the Trailblazers entered halftime down 37-7.
Antoine ran for 83 yards on 14 carries and completed 3 of 9 passes for 46 yards, while Gordon picked up 116 yards on 15 carries.
Westgate sacked LCCP’s Higginbotham and Dylan Vital five times and limited the Trailblazers to 81 yards of total offense.
LCCP fared better in the second half, holding the Tigers to a single score.
“It was just adjustments,” Franklin said. “It was a lot of adjustments that we had to make at halftime that we weren’t seeing early. We made the adjustments and got away with giving them seven points in the second half, but it was too late, and they scored too many early.”
The Trailblazers will look to regroup next week when they host Opelousas.
“We have to keep working,” Franklin said. “The goal is still to win district, so this right here is going to prepare us for district. That team (Westgate) right there is really good. That team will be a quarterfinal, semifinal team easy.”
Both teams struggled with penalties, combining 25 penalties for 249 yards.
