An 18-year-old Port Barre man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Monday night at the intersection of La. 112 and La. 1146.
Louisiana State Police Trooper Derek Senegal said the crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Si Gabriel Sonnier of Port Barre.
Senegal said the initial investigation revealed the driver of a 2015 Freightliner utility truck (bucket truck), was traveling west on La. 112. As the utility truck approached the intersection, it drifted off the right edge of the roadway. The driver overcorrected, traveled across the opposing lane of travel and overturned, which caused Sonnier to be ejected from the vehicle.
Sonnier, who was not properly restrained, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was properly restrained and sustained moderate injuries. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment. A toxicology sample was obtained from the driver and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troop D has investigated 20 fatal crashes resulting in 22 deaths in 2023.
