“Look for the helpers” is sound advice Southwest Louisiana has come to rely on in the aftermath of tragedy. The phrase originated from Nancy McFeely Rogers and was later popularized by her son, Fred Rogers.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, look for the helpers,” Rogers recanted in his book “Mister Rogers Talks with Parents. “You will always find people who are helping.”
Louisiana Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are just such helpers, working diligently to feed first responders, evacuees, air support personnel and delivering meals to impacted areas.
According to Gary Hahler, pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church of Pitkin and the disaster relief coordinator for the Beauregard Baptist Association, the feeding team has cooked at least 450 meals for first responders battling the fires.
The group helped the area during the 2020 hurricanes, as well.
