Final scrimmage last chance for Cowboys to get game-ready

With more than a couple of starting jobs on the line, McNeese State will play its second and final football camp scrimmage tonight at Cowboy Stadium.

The event is free to the public as the Cowboys take their final step toward the season opener in two weeks.

“This is big for us to really see where we are at,” said McNeese head coach Gary Goff. “I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle game situations once again.”

Last weekend the Cowboys put on what Goff called an impressive showing in the opening scrimmage, with the offense scoring seven touchdowns and gaining 598 yards of total offense.

The offensive display was especially telling as McNeese was coming off a season of struggles on that side of the football. Not so during the first scrimmage.

“It was a nice showing but we had a few too many missed assignments,” Goff said.

Tonight the coach said he’s hoping to see fewer of those when the Cowboys take the field at 7 p.m. Unlike last week, there will be no practice before the scrimmage.

“We will just warm up and go,” Goff said. “We want to simulate a game as best we can with the running clock and everything. It is important that we get ready for game conditions.”

The McNeese coaching staff says it wants to cleanup mistakes from last week.

“I want us to play clean,” Goff said. “I don’t want to see those missed assignments. I want us to play fast and play aggressive.”

Goff mentioned this week that there are several positions that have “great” competition going on. That includes quarterback where transfers Tre’ Simmons and Nate Glantz remain locked in battle.

“There is no reason to hurry a decision,” Goff said.

Simmons and Glantz had their moments last week. Glantz finished 10 of 15 for 185 yards while Simmons was 5 of 7 for 129. Both threw a touchdown.

Neither had a turnover, though there were six sacks. That was a big stat last fall as McNeese quarterbacks were sacked 41 times.

Glantz is expected to start tonight after Simmons got the call first last weekend. Before reading too much into that, the two have been switching the starting roles throughout camp as Goff has tried to give them equal time with the first team.

Going into camp the biggest search was for a playmaker at wide receiver. Jon McCall and Aalah Brown stepped up last weekend to lead the field.

McCall had 103 yards on three catches while Brown added 86 yards and a score with his three grabs.

Eleven Cowboys caught passes with Makhi Paris (2-38) and Jalen Wright (1-27) joining Brown in the end zone. Jihad Marks led the Cowboys with four catches for 11 yards.

“A lot of guys made some great grabs,” Goff said. “Overall we had a real good day from that room. They answered the challenge.”

Goff said he expects tonight’s scrimmage to last about 60 plays and is hoping for it to be up tempo like the first one.

The Cowboys will have the rest of the weekend off as they start preparing for the season opener.
