The Beauregard Parish School Board will be further discussing the adoption of a four-day school calendar for the 2024-25 school year at the regular monthly meeting today, Aug. 10.
This was a hot topic at the June meeting, in which two hours of data and personal accounts and viewpoints were presented to the board.
The sides are divided, with those in favor of the 4-day school calendar believing it would improve student attendance and allow students and teachers alike to recover from the last three, chaotic school years caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters.
Those against expressed concerns over possible increased juvenile crime, longer school days and limited child care options for the additional day off.
Also, four policies are facing revision: Public Participation at School Board Meetings, School and Student Safety, Attendance, and Student Absences and Excuses.
The School Board will also discuss approving a new policy regarding carpool and bus line safety
For all five policy agenda items, if approved the waiting period would be waived.
Also on the agenda: the consideration of adopting the Louisiana Compliance Questionnaire for audit purposes, the adoption of the second budget revision for fiscal year 2023 and the acceptance of a beneficial occupancy for repairs at South Beauregard High School.
