Victim in Aug. 1 shooting succumbs to his injuries

Charges have been upgraded against a 23-year-old Sulphur man after the victim in an Aug. 1 shooting died from his injuries.

The victim, James G. Barrilleaux, 34, of Sulphur, died Saturday.

Fontenot’s charges have been upgraded to second-degree murder. Judge Tony Fazzio set his bond at $950,000.

On Tuesday, Aug. 1 at approximately 4 a.m. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a residence on Sherry Street in Sulphur in reference to a medical emergency. Upon deputies arrival, they located a victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

During the course of the initial investigation, detectives developed a person of interest, Erron E. Fontenot, 23, Sulphur, who they believed was possibly hiding in the immediate area where the incident occurred. At approximately 10 a.m. deputies located Fontenot hiding under a mobile home one street over from where the shooting occurred. He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with trespassing.

After further investigation detectives issued a warrant signed by Judge Tony Fazzio additionally charging Fontenot with attempted 2nd degree murder for the shooting. His bond is set at $250,000.

The victim was initially transported to a local hospital. He was later transported to a hospital out of town.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
