McNeese Cowboy Braden Duhon is a fan favorite in Rockford, Illinois this summer, and so is his facial hair, earning him the nickname, “The Mustache Man.”
Duhon is playing collegiate summer baseball for the Rockford Rivets. The stint included coaching a baseball camp for youth.
“The kids couldn’t remember my name, so they just called me ‘The Mustache Man,’ ” Duhon said. “The name stuck. After the camp, they showed up to the game sporting these little fake clip-on mustaches.”
Duhon was inspired to grow out his mustache after Tre Obregon, a Cowboy teammate, suggested it last season.
Duhon calls it a “handlebar that doesn’t curl up all the way.” But the healthy hunk of hair he sports over his top lip looks more like a Hungarian or a Walrus mustache than the iconic waxed handlebar sported by Major League Player Rollie Fingers who started his career in the late ‘60s and played through the late ‘80s.
Duhon trims his, but doesn’t use any product.
McNeese Cowboy Baseball Coach Justin Hill said mustache-wearing baseball players are nothing new, but he’s seen the trend grow in the last five years.
The New York Yankees continue to have very strong rules regarding facial hair. They can only have mustaches and the rest of the face must be clean shaven, according to Hill.
“That’s their identity, but it’s a little archaic in my opinion,” Hill said. He mentioned Obregon and a 2020 graduate, Clayton Rasbeary whose facial hair bordered on a sort of ZZ Top vibe.
“I’m OK with them showing their personalities,” he said.
