Heat advisory continues as temperatures creep closer to three-digit numbers

A heat advisory is in effect this week as temperatures begin to creep closer to three-digit numbers.

Slightly lower humidity during this heat wave will allow daytime temperatures to soar, resulting in a heat advisory and/or excessive heat conditions through at least the first days of August, according to the Calcasieu Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

Dangerous heat expected with heat index values of 109-113 degrees through 7 p.m. today.

Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity and prolonged time outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and drink plenty of water. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles.

“In addition to the heat threat, there is a marginal risk of severe weather (damaging winds) this afternoon due to the remnants of a disturbance currently moving south across Arkansas,” said Donald Jones, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office. “Only a few storms are expected, but they will be capable of strong winds.”

A slight weakness in the upper level heating ridge could allow for the development of showers and thunderstorms across portions of the area Tuesday afternoon and early evening.

“On an optimistic note, only 54 more days until autumn according to the calendar — not that that means a whole lot around here, but hope springs eternal,” Jones said.
