In Jeff Davis: Job fair for substitute teachers planned

The Jeff Davis Parish school district is planning an upcoming job fair for those interested in a variety of substitute positions as the new school year approaches.
The job fair will take place from 9-11 a.m. Monday, July 31 at the Union Baptist Church Family Life Center, 1014 S. Main St. in Jennings.
“This is something unique we started last year,” Assistant Superintendent Ben Oustalet said of the substitute job fair. “I don’t think a lot of systems do this for substitutes. For us it is a good community outreach to reach people who may not know about these job openings.”
The district is looking to hire substitute bus drivers, bus aides, cafeteria workers, custodians, paraprofessionals and teachers throughout the parish.
Nearly a dozen substitutes are needed to start the new school year in August, according to Oustalet.
“To be in good shape we are in need of about 8-10 substitutes who are ready to go to work immediately,” he said.
The district is continuously looking to add candidates to its pool of substitutes, he said.
“Substitutes are needed because they play an important role in making the school system work,” Oustalet said.
Many of the substitute positions have the potential to lead to permanent positions, he said.
“A lot of people start as substitutes and eventually land full-time employment,” he said.
During the job fair potential candidates will learn more about what is needed to become a substitute employee and how to apply. School administrators and representatives from various departments will also be on hand to answer any questions and offer information about available positions.
The event is free and registration and resumes are not required.
Those seeking the positions must be at least 21 years old.
