After a highly successful four year stint, Matt Fontenot has stepped down as the head coach of the St. Louis Catholic baseball program to take other employment.

“I am an alum of St. Louis and a baseball player there,” Fontenot said. “It was an honor to go back and serve the program. I was fortunate to do it and bring success to a program I love.

“Not just from a baseball standpoint, but the schools is undergoing a lot of changes. They are on the cusp of doing something unbelievable. Those plans are still moving forward. I was a big part of those plans, so it was tough to walk away from it.”

Fontenot’s first year at the helm was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic that canceled the 2020 season, but the Saints rebounded to win the 2021 Division II state championship, their first since 2011 and fourth in program history. Fontenot took the Saints to the semifinals in 2022 and 2023 and led them to three consecutive district championships and compiled a 78-37 record.

MOVING UP: A month after moving to Double-A ball, Will Dion, a former McNeese and Sulphur standout, picked up his first win with the Akron RubberDucks, an affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.

Dion struck out six and walked two in six innings as the Rubberducks beat the Harrisburg Senators 5-2 on Saturday. In 15 games, including 10 starts with the Rubberducks and the High-A Lake County Captains this season, Dion is 4-1 with a 2.66 earned run average. He has 74 strikeouts and 18 walks in 641/3 innings.

Dion was a standout pitcher for the Sulphur Tors, leading them to the 2018 Class 5A finals, and for the McNeese State Cowboys where he was the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2021.
