An excessive heat threat warning is in effect through 7 p.m. today as an upper-level ridge is allowing hot air temperatures to combine with high humidity values across Southwest Louisiana.

The National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office said dangerous heat is expected this afternoon with heat index values of 113 degrees or greater.

These dangerous heat index values could bring about heat exhaustion or heat stroke, said meteorologist Lance Escudé.

Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous activity and prolonged time outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and drink plenty of water. Do not leave children or pets in vehicles.

A heat index value up to 116 degrees is expected Saturday and a value up to 113 is predicted Sunday.
