With more than a handful of college football scholarship offers already in hand, Lake Charles College Prep multisport star Elijah Garrick isn’t resting on his laurels in the offseason.
The receiver is working to improve his speed and setting lofty goals for his final season with the Trail Blazers.
“I want to have the most receiving yards in Louisiana, to score every time I touch the ball and to win a championship,” he said.
Garrick has found the end zone often the past two seasons, scoring on seven receptions and two kickoff returns. He lists route-running, hands, size and stride length as his biggest strengths at the moment. He said he’s received offers from Nebraska, Memphis, Tulane, Troy, Toledo, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe and Northwestern State.
He said the recruiting process has been fun.
“I like the way the coaches interact with me and show love to me even though I have other offers,” he said. “It’s fun and I get to go around and visit many different schools and see many other places around the world.”
Garrick says he tries to gather as much information as possible when visiting college campuses.
“I’m interested in the culture, the way they do things there, how much they throw the ball, and to see how the wide receiver coach coaches his players, different things like that,” he said.
Garrick also stars on the hardwood for Prep, averaging 17 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game for the Blazers last season. He helped Prep win a school-record 26 games.
“I get to score the ball, run around getting steals, dunk the ball and beat teams,” he said.
Garrick credits his two head coaches with helping him grow over the course of his high school career.
(Basketball coach Sean Andrus) is a hard-working coach; he loves the grind and loves to win,” Garrick said. “(Football coach Erick Franklin) is great. I wouldn’t be where I am without him. He taught me everything I know about football.”
