After a great comeback story, Bryson Hudgens will not return to McNeese State next season.

Hudgens announced Saturday on social media that after entering the transfer portal he would play next year at Oklahoma State in the Big 12.

Hudgens is the second Cowboy to transfer since the end of the season in May. He joins his catcher, Andrew Gonzales who on Friday announced he was heading to Miami of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The right-handed pitcher missed more than a full year after Tommy John surgery back in the spring of 2022. He returned in time to make five starts for the Cowboys in the spring.

“Just being back on the mound I was overcome with emotions,” Hudgens said. “It felt great to be back out there with my teammates. I didn’t really feel like I was part of the team until then.”

Hudgens finished the year with a 1-0 record while being limited to 16 innings. The right-hander posted a 2.81 earned run average.

In 2022 Hudgens threw just 3.1 innings in the opening weekend of the season at Alabama before he was hurt.

In 2021 Hudgens was 2-3 with a 3.19 ERA.

He has just one more year of eligibility remaining.

“I would like to take the opportunity to say how thankful I am for my 3 years at McNeese,” Hudgens posted. “I will miss the great teammates, coaches, and fans that I had along the way. After entering the transfer portal, I have been blessed with the opportunity to fulfill a dream of mine and play my last year of eligibility at Oklahoma State University.”

Gonzales leaves after a second straight solid defensive year behind the plate but one where he struggled with the bat.

Gonzales hit just .212 in 2023 after posting a .354 average the year before.
