A Jennings woman is recovering in a Lafayette hospital Monday after police say she was struck by a stray bullet while sitting on her porch Friday night.
Jennings police responded to reports of shots being fired just before 9 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of South Main Street, according to Police Chief Danny Semmes.
Upon arrival police found that a woman in her 40s was shot while sitting in a chair on her front porch. She was airlifted to a Lafayette trauma center in stable condition.
Police say the woman was an innocent bystander.
Police believe gunfire was exchanged between several unknown subjects standing in the parking lot of an abandoned convenience store located just south of the victim’s residence.
“According to the victim, there were several subjects standing across the street from her house when the shooting started,” Semmes said. “The victim was sitting on her porch in a chair when she was struck.”
Several bullets also struck the victim’s house, he said.
Police believe the shots were fired from the area of an old abandoned convenience store located about 50 yards south of the residence, Semmes said.
Officers located several shell casings in the area, he said.
Police believe the shooting is tied to several other shootings which have occurred in the city in the past three weeks, Semmes said.
“I firmly believe that every shooting we have had in the past three weeks are connected in some way,” he said. “We are still working on all the shootings and will keep moving forward. All we need is to turn up witnesses or a gun to give us the break we need.”
Friday’s shooting marked the third in the city since Memorial Day weekend.
On Thursday, a man, believed to be in his mid-20s, received two gunshot wounds to the upper torso after being shot in the 200 block of West Willis Street.
Officers responding to the area found evidence of shots being fired on West Willis Street, and several casings were recovered in the area along with other evidence, Semmes said.
A 25-year-old man was shot Memorial Day weekend following a fight at the Down Home Reunion at Marcus Cain Park on Peters Street.
Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for a 15-year-old juvenile for attempted second-degree murder in connection with the shooting. The juvenile remains at large.
No arrests have been made in any of the shootings.
Police did arrest Jonah Uriah Landry, 22, of Jennings early Saturday morning about three blocks away from the latest shooting on unrelated gun charges. Landry was charged with illegal carrying of a weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon after he was found carrying a Glock pistol with an extended magazine
