America’s favorite sport was highlighted at the beginning of the Monday Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Meeting. The Iowa High School Baseball Team was recognized for winning the 2023 LHSAA Division II, non select baseball championship and Carmen Cormier told the Police Jury about an upcoming Sulphur exhibit titled, History of Baseball.

Iowa High School Baseball Head Coach Daniel Hennigan explained why the community, who filled up 75 to 80 percent of the stands for each game, is so proud of the team’s accomplishment.

“Over 20 different guys played in a varsity game, “ Hennigan said. “We’re not the flashiest team, but we finished the season playing a really tough schedule. We’re the last 3A remaining … It is only the second time in the school’s history to be able to do it.”

Cormier told the Police Jury and Parish Administration about the Sulphur Brimstone Museum exhibit to open June 3 with a 4 p.m. reception. The History of Baseball: SWLA will include Minor League history for the area with special emphasis on high school champions and championships, history of the Southwest Louisiana Negro League, and spotlight LHSAA Tournament in Sulphur for the last 12 years.

The City of Sulphur will make a proclamation for Big Leaguers and host the movie Sandlot in the The Grove at 7 p.m., on June 3. The exhibit and baseball–themed family movie coincides with Sulphur Parks and Recreation 75th anniversary celebration. Admission is free.

Jurors authorized the Director of the Division of Planning and Development to notify 20 owners of property in Moss Bluff, Lake Charles, Carlyss, Sulphur, Topsy, DeQuincy and Starks to show cause at the July 6 CPPJ meeting/public hearing why the structures on these properties should not be condemned.

A rezoning was approved, with stipulations, at 6117 Tom Hebert Road. Property will go from single family residential to light industrial to allow for a contractor’s office, shop, storage yard, auto and equipment rentals and limo service.

The CPPJ approved Citadel Completions amended application and support to renew its request for a three-year industrial tax exemption renewal at 80 percent in accordance with LED rules in place in 2017. The amended application states the number of Louisiana residents employed. The original application stated the total number of Citadel Completions employees.

The purchase of 5038 Country Club Court was approved through funding from the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The property will remain vacant green space  for perpetuity.  Property was also purchased using FEMA HMGP funds at 3119 Patton St. CPPJ Grants Director Jennifer Cobian explained that these homes are in the Greenwich Terrace state buyout vicinity, but are not covered by those state funds.

Condolences from the CPPJ will be forwarded to the family of the late Wilmer Dugas. Jurors Judd Barres, District 12; Tony Tramonte, District 15 and Joe Andrepont, District 13, took the opportunity to share their memories of Dugas as an outstanding civic-minded, mentor and someone who could be depended on to do what he said he would do. Barres described him as “one of the most caring individuals I’ve ever come into contact with. He was a colorful character, larger than life….”
