Rain delays no issue, DeQuincy’s wait for title shot over

SULPHUR — After waiting 42 years for a shot to play at the state championship baseball tournament, a few days of rain and a last-minute location change did little to slow down the DeQuincy Tigers, who earned a spot in the nonselect Division IV championship game with a 10-0, six-inning win over Logansport late Wednesday night.
The Tigers (19-11) will face Oak Grove (16-12) at 2 p.m. today in the title game. Their semifinal win over Logansport was first postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday, then moved to Westlake’s all-turf field after more rain Wednesday made the Frasch Park field unplayable.
DeQuincy head coach Brady Carlson said the unusual circumstances didn’t bother his squad.
“They handled the adversity well and did a great job,” Carlson said. “At the start we were a little sluggish and maybe too amped up. But we were able to hit the ball hard, square some up and put pressure on them. We worked the count, made them throw strikes and got some walks.”
Tigers pitcher Reese Ashworth was dominant on the mound, striking out 12 and allowing one hit in five innings.
Carlson said the Tigers have found a winning recipe for success in the playoffs.
“We’ve pitched well all year, but early in the year we were leaving a lot of people on base,” he said. “We have had some guys come around, not just our top guys. Andrew Dowden and Jace Puryear had key hits for us (Wednesday) night and have done well throughout the playoffs. Turner Rodriguez is doing well. We have had guys get big opportunities and they have come through.”
Oak Grove has won the Class 1A state title each of the last two seasons. It beat Mangham 5-4 in the semifinals.
“I know they are a seasoned team and played a hard schedule,” Carlson said. “They have some guys that have been around a few years and will have the experience edge, but we are playing good baseball right now.”
