Teachers, administrators and support staff in the Allen Parish school district are in line for some extra money just in time for summer vacation.
School board members unanimously approved a recommendation from the finance committee on Monday to use surplus funds to pay the district’s more than 400 teachers, administrations and other degreed personnel a one-time salary supplement of $1,600.
Support personnel will receive $1,200.
The money will be distributed to all active school employees by May 26, before the end of the school year.
Superintendent Kent Reed said the supplements are expected to cost the board $1.2 million.
Most of the supplement money comes from $300,000 in unspent Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) funds and $300,000 from the general fund reserves. The remaining supplement balance will come from the School Board’s Sales Tax Enhancement Fund which was approved by voters.
“We are just continuing to try to show appreciation to our teachers and others employees,” Reed said. “This has been another tough year and we are struggling to keep teachers in the profession. It is our way of showing them some support and appreciation for what they do.”
Of the 653 employees set to receive the supplement, 403 are teachers and other degreed personnel with 250 considered support personnel, including custodians, cafeteria workers and bus drivers.
School board members will not receive the supplement.
